!: Prices for the New Lumix GF2 Kits

Are you looking to purchase a new camera? If so, you may wish to wait until January of 2011 when Panasonic releases the new Lumix GF2. Early reviews say this camera is a major improvement over its predecessor in a number of areas. Not only is it smaller and lighter, but is also has a Live MOS sensor that ensures your pictures will be better than ever. Although no official price has been listed on the Panasonic website, many reviewers have already addressed this issue. Here is what they are saying about the upcoming Lumix GF2 prices.

If you are looking to purchase the Lumix camera with a 14mm 2.5 pancake lens, expect to pay around 599.99 euros for this item. This kit comes with the camera body as well as the LUMIX G 14mm/F2.5 ASPH lens. This lens features the micro four thirds mount and has a minimum aperture of F22. As competition will be intense when this camera is first released, you may be able to get a better deal though. This price is only what reviewers have estimated it will be.

If you decide to upgrade to the Lumix GF2 kit with a 14-42 standard kit zoom, then you may be asked to pay 629.99 euros for this particular model. The lens on this model is the LUMIX G VARIO 14-42mm/ F3.5-5.6 ASPH./ MEGA O.I.S. You will get the same camera body, but will get the versatile lens if this is more to your liking. This lens is the equivalent of a 35mm camera lens with a range of 28mm to 84 mm.

For those who want a variety of options at time of purchase, you can choose to go with the Lumix camera package which includes the camera body along with both of the above mentioned lenses. This kit will set you back 729.99 euros. As you can see, the Lumix GF2 should be a hot item with all who wish to obtain a new camera as this small device has so many features. Again, this should be good for the consumer as Lumix GF2 prices will drop as competition among retailers increases. This may be just what you need to get a great camera at an amazing price.

The Orphan Child Called ISO

!: The Orphan Child Called ISO

ISO wasn't easy to change on early digital cameras.

First, here's a quick definition: ISO stands for the International Standards Organization. What it really indicates is a digital sensor's sensitivity to light.

A low ISO is less sensitive and a high ISO is very sensitive.

Further translated: a high ISO like 3200 means that the sensor can capture a clear photo, even in low-light conditions. A low ISO like 100 requires a lot of ambient light for clear shots.

So why is this setting so often ignored? It's harder to sell the benefits of ISO (which is pretty confusing to anyone who is not a camera junkie) versus something simpler like speed (2 photos per second or 5 photos per second...which one's faster?).

Well, I'm here today to try to illustrate the benefits of ISO. It is a prominent feature on all of the latest digital cameras, and is something that you should be aware of when you're trying to take photos in available light.

Benefit #1 - Clear hand-held photos

Here's the problem: you're taking photos indoors on an overcast day. The only way that you can get a proper exposure is to slow down the shutter speed to 1/30 of a second.

The camera's shutter needs to stay open 1/30 of a second to let in plenty of light. Unfortunately, the longer the shutter stays open, the more likely your photo will turn out blurry. The blur is caused by camera shake when you hold the camera in your hands.

While blur is sometimes desirable to illustrate motion, most ot the time it's not the effect you want.

You really want to get a clear photograph, but there isn't enough ambient light. You think you're stuck with two options: use a flash, or attach the camera to a tripod so it's stable.

But here comes ISO to offer up a third alternative: set your ISO to 800 or 1600.

This boosts the light sensitivity of the camera's sensor, so you're not forced to keep the shutter open so long. With a shutter speed of 1/125 or 1/250 you can now hold the camera in your hands and get perfectly clear available-light photographs.

Benefit #2 - Atmosphere

As you increase the ISO on your digital camera, you also increase the noise in the photograph. "Noise" is the appearance of dots and specks, typically in shadow areas of the image.

Digital camera manufacturers have gone to great lengths to minimize noise, even at high ISO settings. This is due to benefit #1 above.

But sometimes you might want that noise in your photograph. Let's say you're taking shots on a foggy day, and the mood of the scene could really use some noise, to give the photo an old-time look.

Boost the ISO as high as it will go (usually 3200) and that noise will appear in your photo. In black and white, it really adds to the atmosphere and the quality of the image.

Benefit #3 - Fast shutter speeds

One of the best uses of a really fast shutter speed is to freeze motion.

If you take a lot of photos of sporting events, you need to be using shutter speeds around 1/1000 of a second or faster. There are not many days where there is enough ambient light to use these super-fast shutter speeds.

The only way that you will be able to catch all the action is if you increase your ISO. If you don't want noise in the photo, just increase the ISO enough to get the shutter speed you want. If ISO 400 will get the job done, then use that.

Summary

I hope that this brief introduction has opened your eyes to the usefulness of ISO settings on digital cameras.

I think that the ability to change ISO on the fly is one of the biggest advantages that digital cameras have over film.

With film you'd have to shoot an entire roll at one ISO setting before you could switch to another (or you had to have 2 cameras with different ISO films).

With digital you can change the ISO anytime, anywhere. It gives you complete flexibility and control over the photos that you take.

Changing the ISO setting does take some getting used to, and it's still not easy to do on some digital camera models.

I am sure though that once you start using it, you'll find yourself saying "Please, sir, may I have some more?"

Never Buy A Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18K Digital Camera

!: Never Buy A Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18K Digital Camera

Why would someone deliberately buy a digital camera, when they knew it had a number of serious flaws? The answer is of course, when they don't care about the flaws, and are making an informed decision. So . . . time for a pop quiz. Name me three serious flaws with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18K Digital Camera. If you can't do it, then don't even think of buying one. If you can that's great. Maybe you'd like to hear a few more reasons why the DMC-FZ18K may not be such a great buy.

Image noise can be a problem with the Lumix DMC-FZ18K, depending on the conditions your are shooting in and how you plan to use your photos. Specifically, if you plan on taking a lot of photos in conditions where the lighting is lower than average, and you plan on blowing your photos up to anything bigger than say 12x24 you won't get the greatest results. If this is a concern for you, then perhaps moving up into the SLR camera category with larger image sensors would be a better choice.

This Panasonic Lumix comes with something the manufacturer calls Intelligent Auto Mode (IAM). It's supposed to help you take better pictures without having to mess around with multiple manual settings. Customers generally find though, that as soon as you get into anything less than perfect lighting conditions, or start using the 18X zoom IAM doesn't always make the best setting decisions. If you want really good pictures in all situations, and all zoom levels, your going to have to learn to adjust the DMC-FZ18K manual settings. Learning can be a good thing, it just depends on how you plan to use your camera.

In the spirit of "buyer beware", I would be remiss if I didn't mention the following, even if it is not an issue with the camera. If the price you find for the Lumix DMC-FZ18K seems too good to be true, then it probably is. There are a few retailers selling a imported "gray market" version of this Panasonic Lumix . Be sure you buy yours through a local retailer you trust, or one of the big online stores with a generous return policy like Amazon.

Well, that's three DMC-FZ18K issues you may or may not have been aware of. But wait, there's more . . .

- high ISO settings produce too much noise

- small size make the dial and joystick cumbersome for larger hands

- in camera processing, eliminates camera noise by blurring image detail

- no zoom function when shooting in movie mode

- slow flash recharge time

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 Camera

!: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 Camera

A fantastic 12.1 mega-pixel digital camera for photography enthusiasts who are looking to move forward from a basic point and shoot to a more sophisticated camera with more manual control. Boasting a spectacular 18x Optical Zoom Leica lens with an enhanced Image Stabilization system, and super high speed auto focus, you will be ready to capture any picture that you want.

This latest digital camera in the Lumix range also has the standard Intelligent Auto Modes, and various other Modes that will enable you to forget about the technical specifics and focus on your subject, which includes an improved Face Recognition system.

Record the moment in more than merely still photographs using the AVCHD Lite, HD movie capabilities with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution, even allowing for full use of the powerful zoom. Make use of the Creative Movie Mode to manually alter both shutter speed and aperture. My Color Mode allows you to get creative with the brightness, saturation and hues, and the High Dynamic Mode will help you to obtain the best possible exposure even if the location contains some very high or low contrast areas.

In this FZ35 Model, Panasonic have improved upon the battery life, making it possible to take as many as 470 photographs on one charge!

Pros

One serious amateur photographer explained that this Lumix FZ35 was one of the very best non-SLR cameras that he has used. He stated that the start up time was incredibly fast, and that the joystick control key at the back made it simple to make adjustments when in manual modes. He likewise liked the straightforward and easy to use menus.

Again, with the more proficient photographers in mind, a number of positive remarks were made about some small aspects, like the metal tripod mount, the 46mm filter threads and the superb macro capabilities.

An additional point which stands out from consumer reviews are the comments on the picture clarity and sharpness.

Something else that makes this camera appealing to people used to digital slrs is the optical viewfinder which is not something typically found on more compact digital cameras.

Cons

An issue that frustrated some people is the design of the lens cap which interfered with the zoom.

Other people also claimed that while the HD videos were decent quality in most settings, in low light or low lit interior settings, the grain was very apparent.

Even though it is possible to shoot in RAW, the Panasonic R2W version is not compatible with common photo editing packages, such as Lightroom or Photoshop CS3. You have got to use Panasonic's Computer software to convert the photo to.tiff which is somewhat awkward.

A couple of people found that the quality of the photographs, notably indoors were very grainy, and that the photos were "soft", and even blurry primarily at the long end of the zoom.

A fantastic bridge between a compact digital camera with all the features and settings you would expect to have from Panasonic, and a full DSLR.
